Rafael Moreira - Part Deux

It seems like so long ago when I first talked to this multi talented guitar player, singer and songwriter that a lot of us discovered on the Rockstar INXS and Rockstar Supernova TV shows.  I contacted Rafa shortly after the end of the first Rockstar season, and we had our first interview.  I was told about this new hard rock band that Rafa put together called Magnetico, and about a brand new album of free form rock and jazz named Acid Guitar.

Now just over a year later, this outrageously talented guitar slinger from Brazil, is getting ready to release a Magnetico album, toured with Paul Stanley, toured a bit more with Pink, played to sold out crowds in Iceland, and is showing no signs at all of slowing down.  We took the time to catch up again, in late December 2006.  Read on...

Darrin: 2006 is coming to a rapid end. Are you glad it is over, and looking forward to a fresh year?

Rafa: It was a great year for me, but I'm looking forward to 2007!

Darrin: So, how was touring with Paul Stanley? How did that gig come about?

Rafa:The shows were awesome and we recorded a DVD! Paul Stanley was watching the TV Show ROCKSTAR and loved the House Band, so he asked all of us if we wanted to tour with him!

Darrin: So, how was the 2nd Rockstar show compared to the INXS version? I noticed a LOT less Queen and other classic rock in the sets this time around.

Rafa: I think on the first season of Rockstar the singers were a little more appreciative to be at the Show and they were really good singers and not only looks! But I also thought there was some good talent on the second season as well!

Darrin: How is Magnetico doing? Are we getting close to a studio release? You guys must have 3-4 albums worth of material to choose from now.

Rafa: That's very true, we have a lot of songs! I'm just waiting for the right time to do it, since I had such a crazy schedule in 2006! I toured w/ Pink and Magnetico in the beginning of the year , I did the Rockstar TV Show for four months in the summer and then toured with Paul Stanley from Kiss and more Magnetico shows!

Darrin: Is there any plans for another cool individual effort like Acid Guitar? Stuff that may be a bit too free form or non-rock for Magnetico?

Rafa: For sure! I wanna to do more of that as well, but right now will concentrate on Magnetico!

Darrin: I saw that back in September you were a judge for Guitar Hero 2006. You were joined by other judges like Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather and Ritchie Kotzen. That is a lot of talent at the table. Did you guys have any time to hang out, or was it all business?

Rafa: Lukather, Ritchie and I flew together from LA and pretty much had a great time ! Satriani was there already, since he lives in the Bay Area and he was really cool!

Darrin: Tell me a bit about the gig you did at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. I heard you played a pretty cool for the GIT students there.

Rafa: It was like a Clinic/ Show! I played material from my CD "Acid Guitar", a bunch of Magnetico tunes, some Hendrix and some Weather Report! And then I also let everyone ask me question and things like that! It was fun!

Darrin: OK, I know there is video out there that has this information, but can you run me through your gear from your top couple guitars, through your rack and ground control to your heads and cabs?

Rafa: I basically use Gibson Guitars exclusively with the exception of a couple Relic strats and Relic Teles from the Fender Custom Shop! I use a couple Custom Les Pauls ( Black And White ) a couple Gold Tops ( 56 and 57 ), Classics and standards, Firebirds, SG ( 61 ), 335 Custom ( Red and Black), also a J-45, J-180 and Dove Acoustic and I many more...mostly from the Gibson Custom Shop! I use Bogner 80 Watts Custom heads and 4/12 straight cabs loaded w/ Celestions Vintage 30's! I have a TC Electronic G-force and a few pedals which are: Boss Volume Pedal 500, Real MacCoy Picture Wah, Boss DD5, Boss CE-2 Chorus, Arion Stereo Chorus, Voo Doo Lab Proctavia and a Electro Harmonix POG all controlled by a Voo Doo Lab Ground Control! I'm able to Tap Tempo every Delay, Tremolo and other crazy sounds from the rack and the DD-5! I use a Trailer Trash Pedal Board, Custom made Dunlop 1mm picks and 10-52's Dean Markley strings

Darrin: What do you do to keep in top playing condition? Do you have a practice schedule to work on different techniques, or is it all from practices, jamming and gigs? I guess the real question is, do you still find time to practice?

Rafa: I don't really practice, I just write music and jam!

Darrin: Back to Magnetico. I saw you actually got to do some dates in Europe with a couple members of Pinks band. How did you guys rehearse that and find time to set up gigs? How was the reception over there?

Rafa: It was just a blast! Basically I was asked to play in Austria with Magnetico in one of my days off on the Pinks tour, so since the promoter didn't have time to get the other guys from the band to fly over seas in time I asked Pink's drummer at the time Mylious Johnson and keyboard player Jason Chapman if they wanted to do it and they were very much into it! W/ Mylious on drums and Jason doing all bass parts in the keyboards and singing backing vocals, I arranged rehearsals in London and Paris! And from there it was unbelievable! We played in Austria in a place built in 1506, headlined a festival in Berlin (Germany) and the best of all was in Switzerland, where we played a show in a packed venue and they didn't want us to leave, even though we only had prepared a few songs,  we came back for more and jammed for an hour!

Darrin: What is up for you in 2007 Rafa? Is there any talk of a third Rockstar show? It is too cool to not have another one. Are you releasing any new music this year? Perhaps finally a trip up the coast to stop by in Vancouver and Victoria for a gig?

Rafa: I can't wait to play in Canada! We hear things about the Rockstar TV show but nothing confirmed yet!!Im definitely putting a Magnetico album out!

Darrin: Is there anyone out there in particular that you would like to give a shout out to?

Rafa: Peace, love and health to everyone!!
