Sometimes
one interview can mean more to someone than another. Don't get me
wrong, I find enjoyment and intrigue in every artist or band that I
talk to. Gob is one of those "special" bands, that have been an
integral part of the music community in the area that I live in. Gob
has been a musical force in the Fraser Valley of BC since the mid
90's. Not just here, but in Canada and the world over. With monster
songs, great albums, movie appearances, soundtrack work and more,
the guys in Gob are humble enough to be accessible to their fans,
and guys like me, that want to pry a bit into the behind the scenes
of a great band and share it with the world.
I caught up with Gabe from the band, and he gave me a bit of an
exclusive interview, as the band is not really doing a lot of that
type of thing right now, as they are demoing some brand new tracks
for their upcoming album. Read on. |

Toe: Gabe, thank
you for taking the time to talk to me. What the heck have you been
up to this summer, now that it is about over?
Gabe: We have been working on demos for the new record..we
have a lot of songs so its taking a while.. the new cd should be out
this spring.
Toe: What is the band up to right now? I have seem a lot of
comments from your fans, wondering what is up, if you guys are still
together, if you are going to put out another CD. What news do you
have for the fans?
Gabe: Oh ya we are together..we needed a little time
away..we have been touring for 10 years, so some at home time was
due.
Toe: You had great success over the last couple of years, after
the release of the cover Paint it Black, for the Stir of Echoes
movie, and of course, Foot in Mouth Disease. What is the writing
like currently. Will we be hearing something similar? Maybe a bit of
a new sound?
Gabe: The new stuff rocks hard! maybe a little darker
sounding...some of it kinda sounds like old Motley Crue..maybe....you
will have to wait and see.
Toe: Foot in Mouth Disease was released in 2003. We are rapidly
approaching 2006. Do you think this amount of time between albums
could have an impact on your fans. Do you think the time between
releases could be detrimental?
Gabe: I'm not sure, but for us I think it has been a good
thing..like I said we needed time to recharge our batteries...for
the fans, we sure have left them wanting so I hope everyone misses
us and will be stoked when we come back.
Toe: Your fans seem to be a pretty tight knit bunch, when you
look at the photos from your site and visit your message board. How
did you build up such a loyal very local following?
Gabe: Devilish good looks and charm?..maybe not? we are a
very approachable band so maybe people dig that.
Toe: Any thoughts on where you may decide to lay tracks for your
new album? What was the recording experience like for Foot in Mouth?
Gabe: I for one want us to record in Vancouver..this city
has some of the best studios in the world and we get good deals on
studio time here so I hope so..Foot In Mouth was recorded in LA so
it was kinda hard to be away from home for so long..also very
expensive..Mark Trombino ruled as a producer though.
Toe: There seems to be a ton of new talent coming out of the
Valley lately. Hedley, Faber, The Heck and more. Are there any
Valley bands you guys tend to follow?
Gabe: I'm not up on a lot of new bands right now..but I do
know the drummer in Hedley.
Toe: I have read a lot of interviews lately from BC bands, and
there are many that name you guys as a major influence. How does it
feel to know that a lot of acts out there look up to you guys, as a
kind of pioneer for punk/rock in BC, as well as Canada?
Gabe: It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...ha,ha..that's
cool..im glad people like our band.
Toe: You guys have had a really cool relationship with Sum 41.
You toured and supported each other, then Wham! They hit the
stratosphere, go multi platinum, move in with Avril Lavigne…very
rock star. Do you guys still keep in contact?
Gabe: We know those sum guys pretty well..whenever we are
in Toronto we see em..or if they are playing here..or we are playing
together..so yes we do stay in contact.
Toe: What do you see in the second half of the decade with Gob?
You guys are young, and I am pretty sure you are not ready to quit
making music just yet?
Gabe: Last half of the decade eh? I see us doing what we
have done all along, writing, recording...and rocking our way around
the world!
Toe: What kind of cool things do you guys do, when not writing,
recording or performing?
Gabe: I thought u said 10 questions? OK then...I enjoy
baby making (my wife is prego). Tom and Theo have been recording
other bands like: By A Thread, Since All Time and Notch.
Toe: Sorry about that, you guys are too interesting to have only
10 questions!! What would I find in your CD player right now?
Gabe: Foo Fighters, my wife wont let me take it out.
Toe: Canucks for the Cup this year? Are you happy hockey is back
on?
Gabe: Ya, I'm very happy about the hockey comin' back. I
missed it last year..Go Canucks Go.
Toe: Gabe, thank you so much for this interview. I know it is
kind of an exclusive, as you are not really doing interviews right
now, but your support of the Green Toe site is amazing. Please let
me know when a CD and/or tour is coming up, so we can make sure to
be out there to support it!!!
Gabe: Thanks a lot and I will for sure let you know when
we start playing again..see you at the show |
