Bif Naked

Bif Naked has pushed the boundaries of acceptability since day one. Her screaming loud creative has never been muzzled as she has unleashed a continual and seemingly endless string of blazing live performances, recordings, videos, quotes, sound-bytes, spoken word, and visuals that have established Bif Naked as one of the most acclaimed and interesting performers to grace the rock stage.

Bif Naked has released her much anticipated album in 2005, “Superbeautifulmonster”. The creation has taken over 3 years with the parts harvested and assembled from over 50 songs written, 35 of those actually recorded. Bif Naked is one of the few women to be nominated for “Rock Album of the Year” at the Juno awards. READ ON!!!!

Toe: Bif, thank you for taking time out to have a chat with me. I know with Superbeautifulmonster releasing very recently, your mind must be on the road.

Bif: Yes, I’m currently on tour until December 19th

Toe: Tell me a bit about your summer. What did you do? Any tourist-esque summer activities?

Bif: I was on tour all summer long and it was the best summer ever!

Toe: Your new album strikes me as an album buy an artist that has come to some realizations about her life, and is facing them, confronting them and preparing to move on ahead. Would that be an accurate account of your mind set when you were writing this album?

Bif: Like every album, I tend to write from fresh experiences. I was a bit of a heartbroken girl when we started writing superbeautifulmonster. But I feel better now!

Toe: As I researched your career for the showcase I am putting up, I have found a reoccurring theme about the many disappointments in your personal life. Generally in the area of love. I have seen you use the exact words "I love love". Does a high profile career that spreads ones personal life paper thin cause a feeling of impossibility to be involved in a relationship, or does that "right" person remain elusive to you?

Bif: I always make bad decisions in the love department because I believe every word that comes out of any boys mouth. Even if he’s a criminal or an alien or something! Ha ha ha. But I still love, love.

Toe: What gave you the strength and ability to face all of these areas of your life, write about them, and make this album although very, deep and at times dark, very...self empowering?

Bif: As a songwriter, I am addicted to expressing myself on a constant daily basis and I am helpless against not spilling my guts with every stroke of my pen.

Toe: I recently read that you auditioned for the L Word. I have enjoyed the series so far. What made you take a shot at a role in that particular series?

Bif: actually, I already filmed the episode that they had offered me a part in. I didn’t audition. And it was so fun!

Toe: It is refreshing to see an artist that has proven her ability to write, sing and perform, take a shot at a TV or movie role. It seems the trend is these days, is to get a few movie roles, and launch a nice corporately sponsored music career. It does not wash with me, personally. What is your stance on people entering the music scene, only after they are well known for their acting careers?

Bif: I think its fantastic! People should do whatever makes them happy in life.

Toe: Tell us what a day in the non touring/recording Bif Naked is like. Pick a day, any favorite day that you want.

Bif: wake up early, go to the dog park, go to the gym, go to the grocery store, back to the dog park, make dinner for my boyfriend, and then go to bed early. Fun, fun, fun!

Toe: Are you still painting?

Bif: Yes, I paint all the time.

Toe: If you had a favorite city anywhere in Canada to play, what city would that be? Why?

Bif: Saint John’s NF, because I want to move there someday. Plus, we could see my new bass player cook-e kiss the cod!

Toe: What would I find in your CD player right now?

Bif: Mastadon “Leviathian”

Toe: I saw you a few years back in Chilliwack BC (a long long time ago) and your stage show was amazing. You are like a coiled spring, you move like a cat, your vocals are spot on. What kind of training regimen do you follow previous to a tour, and while on tour? I heard you are a bit of a martial arts expert!!!

Bif: the best training is one that mimicks the sport or performing that you will be doing. So I do a lot of plyometrics, isometrics, and jumping rope.

Toe: So what are the short term plans (balance of 2005)? Can I be expecting to see you playing live in a venue near me?

Bif: Absolutely! We will be on tour until the end of 2005. Keep checking the website for updates.

Toe: Who is going out on the road with you this time around? (The Bif Band) You always have such a tight band.

Bif: Doug Fury on guitar, Scotty Sexx on the drums, and our new bass player Cook-e. They are the best!

Toe: Bif, I wish the best of you in the following months, and I hope you let me know when you are in town for a show. I will track you down for another interview and a vegan smoothie!!

Bif: Awesome!!
